23 days. 63 venues. 183 events. 658 speakers. Another wonderful Vivid Ideas season wraps up. Here are my top 20 lessons from across this big festival of creativity, innovation and imagination.
Purpose is everything.
It’s how you attract talent and create value. "Build something that creates value for humanity," advised @planetlabs founder @cboshuizen. This was a trend also spotted by Jacqui Bourke @GettyCreativity, as searches for social responsibility, purpose, integrity are on the rise globally.
Learn as you go.
You don’t have to have all the answers before you begin. Educator @ZeinaChalich shared her approach to running a successful maker space and tech program at her school - be open, honest and learn along with the students. They’ll respect your authenticity and realise there are no rules to invention.
Avoid creative nostalgia.
Ferrari design director Flavio Manzoni suggested retro design shows a lack of courage and entropy of communication. Yes, it’s easier to hark back rather than take the risk to pioneer a new aesethetic - but courage is more than its own reward.
