Today, the City of Sydney released the stats we gathered two weeks ago at our twice-yearly street count.
I was very sorry to learn homelessness in the inner city has risen by 13% since this time last year. This is a significant increase.
More people sleeping rough on our streets is a symptom of the #housingcrisis: underinvestment in public & #affordablehousing means the most vulnerable in our community can end up couch surfing, staying in overcrowded housing, or on the streets.
Both sides of politics need to do better on this. When we see public housing estates like Waterloo being sold off, with only replacement levels of social housing, this is part of the problem. It’s one of the reasons the City of Sydney are calling for much higher levels of social and affordable housing on public housing sites.
I discussed some of these issues with The World Today on ABC Radio.
